Description
The monumental and imposing bank building is a major work by architects Ernst Gotthilf and Alexander Neumann and was constructed between 1909 and 1912 for the Wiener Bankverein. To make way for it, a building on the Ringstrasse dating from 1861 to 1863 had to be demolished; it was the first demolition in the Ringstrasse area.
The building itself was constructed in the Secessionist-Neoclassical style and stands freestanding on three sides at the prominent corner of Schottenring and Schottengasse. It served as the headquarters of Creditanstalt-Bankverein from 1934 until 2002, when it was acquired by Bank Austria.
The building is arranged around cross-shaped interior wings and four glass-covered courtyards. The central risalits stand out prominently on the facades facing Schottenring and Schottengasse. On the corner risalits along the Ringstraße, sculpted figures can be seen above triangular pediments, each depicting two youths holding a ship’s prow and a globe, respectively.
An extensive revitalization project is giving this historic gem of Vienna’s history a modern character. However, the top priority here is the sustainable preservation of the historic structure; for example, the state rooms are undergoing nothing more than a “refresh.”
The building’s infrastructure is particularly impressive due to the internal synergies it creates.
